J. Guinovart, Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), Spain
Joan J. Guinovart is Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Barcelona and Director of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona)-The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. He is also group leader in CIBERDEM, the Spanish Research Network on Diabetes. He received his PhD from the University of Barcelona and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on glycogen metabolism, with special attention to the alterations in diabetes and Lafora disease. His main recent achievements are showing that neurons have an active glycogen metabolism but that glycogen accumulation is lethal for these cells and that it underlies Lafora disease; and showing that restoration of hepatic glycogen levels is an effective treatment for experimental diabetes and obesity. Dr. Guinovart was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy (2005) and the Academia Europaea (2011).
